I have two distinct memories from my first viewing, probably around 2007, that did not jive with the most recent viewing. I'm aware of different releases for different audiences, but in these cases, it appears I either remember very specific things incorrectly, or there were more than just re-cuts, but re-edits, using different takes. Two quick examples: after Matteo's death, in my original viewing, his mother was trying to wipe her son's blood off the street, saying they missed spots when cleaning, and her grieving family around her, trying to stop her from doing this. I don't remember the repeated dropping of books that we see in the current version.

In my first viewing, I remember that Sara actually had the wedding, and had not connected with her mother yet, but Nicola had invited her, I believe. Her mother sat alone on a bench, processing what she had done to her daughter, and this was the moment Nicola gives my favorite line "Are you happy? Then now is the time to be generous." Sara then goes over and joins her mother on the bench. There is no organ playing scene, there is no pregnancy announcement or re-connection scenes like in the current version.

Not only do I not see how or why I'd remember these very distinct differences if they were not real in some previous version, but the usually reliable internet doesn't seem to mention anything like my confusion.

Anyway, if you have any insight here, I'd appreciate it, otherwise, let me just say I thoroughly enjoyed your recap!

Bill
https://www.blogger.com/feeds/1975416078255909953/4575199983609409355/comments/default/8508279694865256745
self
application/atom+xml
https://www.blogger.com/feeds/1975416078255909953/4575199983609409355/comments/default/8508279694865256745
alternate
text/html
https://www.criticsatlarge.ca/2018/05/the-best-of-youth-in-fullness-of-time.html?showComment=1630275696474#c8508279694865256745
{"$t":"Billium99
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/02402311094613155655
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
"gd$extendedProperty":
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1975416078255909953.post-8852712263301301043
$t":"2021-08-29T13:47:14.745-04:00
$t":"2021-08-29T13:47:14.745-04:00
text","$t":"This show is beyond anything. You've nailed some some stuff here in your observations. Scott's multiple points of view. Historical British India as a hyperobject; something viewed from multiple points of views, Cubist almost. Each point of view speaks for itself. Not even the author appears to interfere. It provides a kind of overview that is blurry but in many ways more accurate than a precise history of an era. Just re-watching A Passage to India, made the same year, and unlike TJITC it seems a more cartoony and less convincing, perhaps something to do with your point about series vs. movies. Interesting that some actors worked both films, Peggy Ashcroft and Art Malik, but I also noticed Ishaq Bux in Passage and sure enough he was in both. I didn't realize that was him in Rocky Horror P S too. So many beautifully drawn characters in both the Raj Quartet book and the series. An astonishing accomplishment. Oh, Col Layton was captured by the Germans in N. Africa not by the Japanese. He's an interesting one too; so much lurking below the surface as a result of his war experience. Thanks for the inspiring review.
https://www.blogger.com/feeds/1975416078255909953/202963528406993777/comments/default/5881747833141698542
self
application/atom+xml
https://www.blogger.com/feeds/1975416078255909953/202963528406993777/comments/default/5881747833141698542
alternate
text/html
https://www.criticsatlarge.ca/2020/08/the-jewel-in-crown-this-is-how-its-done.html?showComment=1629865131387#c5881747833141698542
{"$t":"Clive
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/03157933440777720220
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
"gd$extendedProperty":
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1975416078255909953.post-2801530291910146698
$t":"2021-08-08T15:06:57.754-04:00
$t":"2021-08-08T15:06:57.754-04:00
text","$t":"It's a wonderful read and I'm honored by y...
html","$t":"It's a wonderful read and I'm honored by your kind words.
