I myself believe that the 2017 film just completely and utterly missed the mark in terms of the execution of the themes and messages espoused in the 1995 film. I think that the whole “Memories don’t define us, What we do defines us” narrative is hollow and uninteresting. What I liked about the live action film was the CGI though I think they did a pretty good job in the visual effects department. Sadly, the plot in the 2017 movie was, in my view, oversimplified and closed the door on a lot of the interpretation that the 1995 version invited. Anyway, I see you put a lot of effort into this article and I appreciated that. It's my favorite film for many reasons. I found your review the most relevant of all that I've read--it eloquently covers the key elements without resorting to an unnecessarily comprehensive overview. Thank you for your insights.

I believe that Matteo's "gift" to Giorgia was that her compulsion for finding Matteo's photographer was her motivation to get out of the asylum--in other word's, Matteo in death luring her to her destiny.

The only other thing I could add to your superb summary is a resolution of the mystery of Matteo, which is a very strong current in the film that mirrors the duality and identity crises of Italy and other characters and relationships. I had suspicions even early on that Matteo was gay--or at least sexually confused and definitely sexually repressed. That seems to be the most likely foundation of all of his insecurities and depression. Look at all the signs: the first prostitute referring to him as "weird," the transvestite he picks up, his unbridled anger, his self-imposed isolation, his reaction to his friend's injury (he may have had feelings for him), his inability to form romantic relationships. In an interview ( http://www.public.asu.edu/~srbeatty/466/TheBestofYouth%20Pressbook.pdf )the actor who played him said "He has a strong – repressed, undisclosed - homosexuality." That was validation for my conclusion, but I suppose it's still up for interpretation. The director himself referred only to Matteo's "pathological sensitivity."

It's sad that so few people have seen this masterpiece, but I'm doing my best to spread the word. I own the Nero Wolfe series as well as the due South series in which he played two guest roles. I loved him as an extra-terrestrial in Stargate SG-1 and his love for those little cakes [cupcakes]. I loved him as the sheriff in the pilot of Eureka. Sometimes she's a little street-savvy sociopathic thief, sometimes she's a preachy anti-smoker...etc. Could be difficult for a young actor to find the core pulling those contradictory qualities together and maybe didn't get enough guidance from the director.

Michael J.
